Well, without knowing what type of motorcycle you are talking about it is hard to give you a complete answer. *Most* motorcycles had a spedo port on the transmission in which the speedometer cable would connect. On some older Japanese models, the speedometer cable would connect with the front wheel.
Some custom, chopper and bobber builders/ owners have gone the way of the bicycle and use small speedometers built for bikes. There are wired and wireless versions of these available. Another option is a GPS unit. Hope some of this helps.

Your speedometer might not be connected if it does not work. It might also have blown a fuse if it is an electronic speedometer or it could have a wire that is loose.

If it is a stock model speedometer, there is no speedometer cable. there is a sensor on the transmission which transmits signals in a wire to the speedometer assembly, which is on your dashboard. If you have a problem check the speed sensor, or the wiring to it. JOEDI
Older cars have a cable, which is turned by a gear at the rear of the transmission, and this operates a mechanical speedometer. Modern cars have an electronic sensor in the gearbox which is linked by wire to an electronic speedometer.
