I coudn't find any answers to this so broke down and bought this aux interface (SOUNDGATE AUXGMV3/AUXGM Auxiliary Interface (03-04 GM)) from Amazon.com. I needed it to hook up a Harmon Kardon iPod system, and it works great! With my ipod hooked up it sounds better than the stock system, the bass really comes through better.
As long as the wire hardness are the same . it will fit.
just hook it up to a wire with power when the key is turned on the same wire that turns on your stereo just change the fuse to your stereo from a 10 amp to a 15 amp
Your radio has to have an AUX in or be able to connect to a CD changer
read owners manual
Wire cutters and screw drivers and a drill.
Upgrading a CD changer on a 1999 c280 requires removing the old radio, harness and finding a capable audio system. Changing the wire harness will allow for a newer system to function properly. After removing all the older connectors the new CD changer will slide in with little effort.

I have found that all 1999 Beetles are pre-wired for 6 disc changer. The wire is tuked away behind a small square plastic panel. This panel is located in the trunk on the left iner panel. Pop off the small access panel and you will see a female end. Now go to your local junk yard and find a changer and mounting bracket. You will have three holes under the carpet which the bracket mounts to. The changer just plugs into the wire you found behing the panel. Now your jaming....Sean
I figured it out tonight. In my car I have (from top to bottom) a single CD player/radio, then the heat controls, then a six CD changer. First I had to pop off the wood grain that was around the console by pulling out on one of the corners. You could also use a small screw driver at the very bottom of the grain to get it started. I had to lift the six CD changer so the tabs could pop out, then slide it out. It had a ground wire that is tight. Then I had to unscrew the 2 screws on each side of the air controlls and slide that down to where the six CD changer was. Then to remove the single CD changer I had to follow the ground wire from the six CD changer and unscrew where it was connected. That screw is the only one that was holding in the single CD changer. Then I had to lift the single CD player/radio up(just like the six CD changer), and slide it out. I hope this can help someone.
Exchanging an OEM single CD radio with an OEM 6 CD radio is a simple upgrade which requires the use of a proper wire harness to ensure radio usability. Once the stock radio is removed from the dash the 6 CD changer will plug right into the proper OEM wire harness.
