In the early onset stages of schizophrenia there are many simple techniques in tending to a resolution. New studies have shown that simple brain training activities daily can improve the neuro pathways of a person with the disorder (in mild to moderate cases). So, perhaps going online or to a library and having the person do activities involving brain teasers, testers, lateral thinking, logic processing (working with logical thinking) for at least 1 hour a day, will show signs of improvements in the subconscious behaviour of someone enduring schizophrenia over a long period of time (it would have to be daily for months or even years). The trick is to keep that persons mind active with influences that are pro-active (no fiction and no fantasy, mainly just fact, truth and knowledge - eg watching documentaries on life and not movies on Horror stories). With severe cases of schizophrenia, medical treatment and psychiatric evaluation/conditioning is essential.

Just understand one thing, most mental illness ARE curable over time, this is a fact most of the public are unaware of.

The main cure is kindness.

  • Don't harass them all day, nor supervise them all day.
  • Do ask them to help plan something near future (things like organise a cup of coffee or a glass of fruit juice with a friend). For long term goals, sometimes they can plan ahead.
  • The medications make it difficult for them to move around (exercise), yet it differs according to what type of medications they are prescribed. Mostly, there are sedatives involved and that makes even a short walk difficult. So give them some tender loving care, go for short walks if at all, and let them sit awhile in gardens if they like. Give them pictures they want to look at but not rude ones. Give them something calming; something that won't anger or agitate them.
  • Make a future plan to give them a ride to outside the city, to go to a quiet place with a kind friend who does not insult or criticize them, have a picnic when possible.
  • If a person feels everything they think, say, and do is criticized, or disagreed with, they will give up the will to live.
  • Many people with that diagnosis have had an accident but have forgotten. Since the injuries to the head, neck and spine can cause amnesia, they just forget they had a head injury. The spinal column and nervous systems have in some way been traumatized, even severe mental/emotional experiences can do that, and that can mean it will take years to recover. Chiropractic will help, osteopathy too if possible. All of these things will help. Also, go to a Natural Health Shop and buy some Bach Flower Therapies, they can be added to the cures storehouse for that person. They suffer terribly, and often, non stop for years. Be kind. Be nice. Be good.
  • It's impossible to cure a person of any disease by being cruel, or criticizing or verbal sniping. Verbal sniping is non stop storing up of other people's faults and failings just to say it later to put the sufferer down. Those who have schizophrenia are often unjustly sniped at non stop, whether it's by people who laugh at them, or by their voices being mean non stop. Either way, the schizophrenia sufferers are struggling on feeling very, very alone because others don't want to know or don't want to understand and to be kind to them. That can cause awful sorrow and depression.
  • Non stop surveillance, 24-hours a day, is unnatural and causes more sorrows, regardless of whether it's by nurses and doctors, or by automated electronic surveillance. Don't try it on anyone. If a person is saying: "but, I didn't do anything wrong, and now I'm locked up and called schizophrenic", they are usually being quite honest, and if they are watched non stop all the time, they cannot help but feel that someone is suspicious of them, and then the patient gets suspicious that "someone is out to get me" . Sometimes, someone really is out to get them, but once a doctor diagnoses them, even if a drug dealer attacked their head and caused the whole problem, the doctor gets money for saying: "it's paranoia, this patient needs my drugs and my treatment", and then nobody will really listen to the patient saying things like "but, I think the gang hates me". Then the doctor calls it Paranoia. They are often being as truthful as they can.

Do not expect people to believe everything you say, nor believe everything you hear, because people are imperfect. Tender Loving Care is like a tonic, and is good for anyone. Give some. Smile.

They need professional help

You need to help them see that they should go to a psychiatrist or licensed therapist, Be understanding and loving, and tell them the things that you see that make you think they have a problem, and let them know that you are still their friend and/or loved one no matter what.

Talk to them as normally as possible. Sometimes they have disorganized thinking and speech. During this time they may or may not understand what you say but continue to speak normally if it doesnt bother them.

There is no secret code for communicating with them. Sorry.

The best answer is, ask the person how to work with them. Schizophrenia has many different degrees of severity, and there are different ways to control the symptoms. What will work with one person will not necessarily work with another person.

Having said this, schizophrenia is a condition, not a character label. Schizophrenia can be controlled with medications and therapy, just like lupus can be controlled with medications and regular check-ups. However, both schizophrenia and lupus can flare up unexpectedly, so there will be times the person will need some space to get the medical condition back under control.

Be respectful, be honest and be open to conversation and learning. You very well may be working with the best co-worker or employee you will ever meet.

Often the first step toward getting help with schizophrenia is a conversation with the family doctor. Any medical professional who knows the family history will be able to recommend the best way to obtain help with any mental illness.

Learn as much as you can about it, and be understanding. Treat them like anyone else, with an awareness that they may react oddly.
