There is evidence today from medieval manuscripts to show that the Roman system used superscript numerals to indicate multiplication in a similar way that we would use exponents to express powers.

For instance: XXV would mean 20*5 = 100 = C

Likewise: 300 000 000 would be expressed as MCCC but with an horizontal bar above the numeral M to indicate multiplication by a thousand (1 000 000*300 = 300 000 000)
