Type the power required - e.g. 2, then continue typing, even if it is only a space. Highlight the power (without picking up that space), click on FORMAT, then FONT. Tick the boxes for SUPERSCRIPT, OK and all is done.
Why did you need the extra space? Because when you continue typing, you want it to be in the original size, otherwise you would have to go back and set the following text back to normal. (The methodology of worrying about the formatting at the end, rather than as you go can be a timesaver.)

A format called "superscript" makes the numbers or letters both raised, and somewhat smaller than the normal font - which is exactly what you need for a power. You can either select this format in "Format - Font", or press the shortcut Ctrl-Shift-plus.
If you want to do something like 102 then type in the 10 and then press, Ctrl - Shift and the plus key. Then type the 2. You can also do it through Format Font options.
