The way we write out Roman numerals today differs in many respects to how the ancient Romans actually did themselves.

But there is historical evidence to suggest that the Romans would have first calculated the equivalent of 999,999 on an abacus counting board and then simplified the result in written format as I(M) which means 1,000,000-1 = 999,999
