If you mean a "Tamaya" it is written 霊屋 /ta ma ya/ and is a Shinto altar in which ancestors are worshiped and paid homage to.
If you mean those mobile altars about size of a closet, where the picture of the deceased is kept and stuff like that, it is called 仏壇 /bu tsu dan/.
