Most telephone numbers in the UK fall into one of the following formats:

  • 02x xxxx xxxx: used in London, Portsmouth, Southampton, Cardiff, Coventry, and Northern Ireland (all numbers beginning with 02)
  • 01xx xxx xxxx: used in other large cities (12 area codes 01x1 and 011x)
  • 01xxx xxxxxx: most other geographic numbers (500+ area codes 01xxx)
  • 01xxxx xxxxx: rare area codes (12 area codes 01xxxx)
  • 01xxx xxxxx: shorter numbers in 40 area codes
  • 01xxxx xxxx: shorter numbers in 1 area code
  • 03xx xxx xxxx: non-geographic numbers charged at geographic rate
  • 0500 xxxxxx: freefone numbers
  • 055 xxxx xxxx: VoIP numbers
  • 056 xxxx xxxx: Corporate numbers
  • 07xxx xxxxxx: mobile numbers
  • 070 xxxx xxxx: personal "follow-me" numbers
  • 076 xxxx xxxx: pagers
  • 080x xxx xxxx: freefone numbers
  • 0800 xxxxxx: freefone numbers
  • 084x xxx xxxx: non-geographic numbers
  • 087x xxx xxxx: non-geographic numbers
  • 09xx xxx xxxx: premium rate numbers

To write a UK number in international format, replace the leading 0 with country code +44.

(The plus sign means "insert your international access prefix here." From a GSM mobile phone, you can enter the number in full international format, starting with the plus sign. The most common prefix is 00, but North America (USA, Canada, etc.) uses 011, Japan uses 010, Australia uses 0011, and many other countries use different prefixes.)
