Place the check in front of you on a writing surface, grasp a working pen (pencil will not do) and follow the lines available, placing the appropriate information in the spaces provided.

Start with the date (upper right hand corner) Use the current ( and complete) date: Month, date and year (example - June, 7th 2002)

Fill in the recipient's full name (example Mr. Jacob Smith -not Jake Smitty) or business name (example XYZ Company)

Fill in the amount numerically after the dollar sign (example $ 43.17) you will find this at the end of the space for the recipient's name.

Write the amount in full, (example Forty-three dollars --- /17 ) You may use numbers for the cents but must write "dollars." Be certain the two amounts are the same, a bank can not cash a cheque that is incorrectly or incompletely filled out.

Sign the bottom right line (use the signature you use on official documents)

If you would like, fill in the bottom left line with a description of the transaction (for example Rent for July 2002)

Double check you have filled in all the amounts, the date and amounts are correct and deliver the cheque to the recipient.

Is it illegal to write and date a cheque knowing it will bounce?

Yes, Writing a bad check is a crime. You are not supposed to write a check that cannot be cashed. You must write a check only when you have a corresponding bank account and have enough money in that account to pay for the check. If that is not the case then your check is termed bad and you are liable to be prosecuted/jailed/fined for doing so. The rule is the same in all countries/states and Colorado is no different.
