This speech should be unique to your own experience. Be sure to include stories, jokes or memories that others will remember so that it is more personal to them. You can start your speech by saying something like: "Friends, family, teachers and fellow students. I am filled with both happiness and sadness as I stand here before you today. I am eager to start the next chapter of my life and follow the road that stands before me, however, it upsets me to think I won't pass the familiar faces of those who attended __________, each and every day. It is so easy to waste our lives: our days, our hours, our minutes. ... It is so easy to exist instead of to live. I hope that each of you will "live" with every decision you make from now on. Remember, each day is a blessing and we should try and experience life to the fullest why we have a chance to."

A good strategy is to foreshadow and summarize the arguments that your team is going to present.

It is a good idea t start something like:

'This house believes...'

'I will speak to you for/against the motion...'

Statistics show that...

In my opinion, i predict..

i think a good way to state an opening statement to a debate is to say it firmly... not to say "we believe" or "in our opion"

for instance< it should say something like, " medical marijuana should be legalized under regulations of the government." notice how i said "it should be".....

When speaking to an audience, you want to make people interested in, and sympathetic to, both your subject matter matter and yourself. There is no single kind of good opening, but a bit of carefully chosen humor, especially of the self-deprecating kind, will relax your audience and make them like you.

The opening remarks for a formal speech would begin with addressing the VIPs and invited guests, and expressing thanks for the opportunities the school and teachers have provided. "The Honorable Steven Congressman, Headmaster David Bigteacher, Distinguished Guests, ladies and gentlemen, I would like to begin by expressing my thanks for the opportunities that the teachers and staff have provided me."
