There are various brass cleaning agents available to polish brass such as (in UK) Brasso, and Duraglit. These should be applied, left to dry then polished off using a lint free cloth or duster.
A word of warning. If your brass instrument is gold or silver plated or is lacquered do not use these products! It will remove the plating or lacquer.
Silver has special non abrasive cleaning agents available such as 'silverglit' and Gold plating like lacquered instruments only need a rub off with a lint free cloth or duster.
