Scrooge is selfish because he always cares about saving money. Through his adventures he learns that life doesn't always have to be about money. He then gives all his money and gifts to the people who deserve and really need it the most.

Charles Dickens reveals character in "A Christmas Carol" through the use of vivid descriptions, character actions, and dialogue. For example, Scrooge's miserly behavior and cold-heartedness are shown through his interactions with others, his refusal to help those in need, and his harsh language. By contrasting Scrooge's character with those of the more generous and kind-hearted characters like Bob Cratchit and Fred, Dickens effectively highlights the transformation that Scrooge undergoes throughout the novella.

Before the ghosts/spirits visited Scrooge, he didn't care about anyone but himself and money.

On cold wintery days he didn't want to spend money on coal so that his only employee Bob Cratchit could keep warm. Scrooge had Bob working long hours for very little money.

When two men arrived at Scrooge's workplace to see if he would like to donate any money to the poor, Scrooge tells them that he would not donate any money to anyone that is poor and because some of the donations were going to people who were in prison and the mentally insane.

A hungry and cold young boy tries to sing Christmas carols to Scrooge, but Scrooge makes him leave.

Scrooge had a fiancee who broke off their engagement because she realized that Scrooge cared only about money and not about love.
