English spelling and pronunciation does not come as close as it does in some other languages. Spelling is not taught in either Spanish or German schools. Spanish children have difficulty distinguishing between the spoken b and v. The ll and y are the same. The g represents two different sounds but that is it. German has a few vowels that can be mistaken, but that is about it. French, on the other hand, has changed since spelling was decided. The accent marks are not stress marks but pronunciation cues telling how vowels were pronounced at the time of Gutenberg. French leaves off the last letter or ending. Japanese also has spelling problems. Maybe English will get straightened out.

Why is forty not spelled with a U in it?

The spelling of words can vary between different languages and their historical influences. In the case of "forty," it is influenced by Old English, where the letter "u" was not used in the word's spelling. This lack of a "u" in "forty" has continued over time, even though other English words containing the "or" sound, like "four," have a "u" in their spelling.
