In The Odyssey Homer portrays the gods are selfish, petty, and spiteful, especially in regards to men. The gods are self serving and use men for their own gains and entertainment. The people in the story stay loyal to these undeserving gods even when it's to their own detriment.
In the Odyssey, the gods are often much less grand. They function more as spiritual guides and supporters for their human subjects, sometimes assuming mortal disguises in order to do so.
