This is supposed to be a higher guiding principle for your human existence . Higher than the needs of your ego and your personal space or opinions.
How much has it influenced the world is hard to quantify. I must say its very little, The land where this epic was written has itself lost the teaching. Instead of helping guide the community that propounded this beautiful set of values, People are embracing just the opposite.
