Contrary to some internet myths, President Obama's past career is actually quite normal. There have been a number of other past presidents who were college educated; there were also a number of presidents who at one time practiced law. In addition, there were presidents who were involved in teaching or some other aspect of education. And there have also been many former presidents who had previously been either senators or representatives.

Both Michelle and Barack Obama were attorneys, but when Barack decided to pursue a career in politics, he allowed his law license to lapse, since he was no longer going to be practicing law. Florence Harding has a career as piano teacher and manager of a newspaper, but did not have a public life of any importance other than politician's wife.
