The soft tail has the shock absorber mounted underneath the bike. The hinge is still in the normal position on the frame however the "normal" dual external shocks mounted on the side(one each left/right) are not present. The usually single shock is hidden from view underneath the frame almost directly under the drivers seat to be more asthetically pleasing. Most stock under shocks are rated at 300 pounds. There is a heavy duty shock for 500 pounds. The term soft tail is really a misnamed title. Any motorcycle frame with a shock absorber is soft as opposed to the rigid or hard tail frames still in use today.
