It is a secondary battery it stores enough power as in case of yr emergency lamps and utilise it later.

UPS is for the purpose to give un-interruptible power

supply. This stores the energy in the form of DC by the

controlled rectifier (AC - DC converter) and discharge the

energy in the form of controlled AC by inverter (DC - AC

converter) so as to provide continuous power supply. Here

the back up is derived based on the requirement.

types:

1. Online Double convertion UPS (Normal High capacity UPS)

2. Online Delta convertion UPS (New technology offline

using buck boost Transformers)

3. Offline UPS (economical UPS medium capacity UPS 3 -

30KVA also available in higher capacity)

4. Line Interactive UPS (lower capacity UPS 300VA - max5KVA

output will be Squasi Sinewave).

UPS are used in home, medical, IT and industrial where the

critical load is used.

If, by UPS you mean 'Un-interruptable Power Supply' (as opposed to the web-site for UPS parcels... You plug your computer into the UPS and the UPS into the mains. If the mains power fails for any reason, the UPS will maintain power to your computer for a limited time - to enable you to finish your work and close it down properly. A UPS is essentially a giant re-chargeable battery.

An uninterruptible power source (UPS) is a battery that is located within a computer. It is charged by plugging the computer into the mains power supply. There are two types of UPS, standby and continuous. A standby UPS is most commonly found in home computers. When the computer detects a problems with the power supply, such as a damaging power spike, it will switch from the mains power supply to the standby UPS. The other type of UPS is continuous, here the computer runs continuously off the battery which is being continuously recharged from the mains power supply.
