Most cruise ships now days are diesel-electric.

In other words, they run a diesel motor which will turn a generator to make electricity, which is then transfered to spin a shaft attached to (a) propeller(s), or more commonly (an) azipod(s). If you are talking about the voyage, passengers buy tickets, go on the ship, buy souvenirs,stay a few nights, eat good food, go on land excursions and leave happy. It's for pure leisure.
