A dam works by the movemoent of water when the water is full the dam will the let all of the water out and it repeats over and over again
Improved Answer:-
A dam works by blocking the flow of the river by storing water, which forms a resorvior up stream from the dam. as water continues to flow from the river up stream from the dam.
They don't.
OR
They do. It's pretty simple. Water in held back, usually by a dam so that when it's released it has more force and volume(amount). Another option is to channel or hose the water into a narrow path so that it flows faster with more force. When the water is released or channeled, it pushes the blades of a giant turbine(like a fan) which turns a generator connected via shaft and generates electricity. The electricity is sent through lines to Transformers where it is amplified in power and sent out for use.
water---->
All dams have an overflow channel of some sort. Once the water level reaches this level, excess water escapes over the overflow, so keeping the dam water level constant. In other dams there are inbuilt means to open sluice channels manually or automatically to regulate water levels. When overfull, the sluice opens to release the excess water down stream. Most dams have to maintain a constant flow of water in the stream or river that is below the dam wall, either for leisure (canoeing) or environmental considerations (fishing, farming irrigation, etc).
Water gets sucked into a turbine. The turbine is connected to a magnet and a generator and the water turns the turbine making electricity. That you use in your house and as I type as well.
blocks water from flowing somewhere it shouldn't
water control damns link in a chain through a river such as the fox river in Illinois they let water flow over 1 dam at a time and the water goes to lower ad lower elevations.
a dam
The dam was created from a joint effort from the Brazilian and Paraguayan governments. An agreement was signed on July 22, 1966 to study the construction. Work on the dam began in 1970.

The hoover dam works by spouting water out of penstocks and into a man-made river, which then enters the dam and the moving water turns the turbines of the generator, which produces the energy we need to power things.

The Three Gorges Dam is a hydroelectric dam that spans the Yangtze River in China. An American designer, John L. Savage, surveyed the area of Hubei and drew up a dam proposal for the Yangtze River Project. Deng Xiaoping in 1979, initiated the work on the dam and in 1994, actual construction began.
