World War II submarines were powered by large electric motors. On the surface, the motors drew their power from diesel generators, not unlike how a diesel locomotive operates today. When submerged, the diesel engines could not be operated, and the motors drew their power from huge banks of electric batteries. After the batteries were drained of their power, the submarine would have to surface in order to run its diesel generators to provide propulsion and electric power to the submarine. During this period, the sub's batteries were recharged. Toward the end of World War II the submarine snorkel was invented, which gave a submarine the capability of running its diesel engines while submerged. The submarine was required to stay relatively close to the surface, but it was fully submerged with the exception of the snorkel mast.

Nuclear powered submarines also have banks of electric batteries, but they are only used when the main propulsion plant and/or its steam-powered electric generators are disabled. When a nuclear-powered submarine's batteries are fully drained, they are recharged by the boat's diesel generator if its steam-powered electric generators are not available, or by the steam-powered electric generators when they becomes available. Just like a diesel-electric submarine, a nuclear-powered submarine must operate its diesel generator on or near the ocean's surface.

How do you recharge a diesel battery?

I don't think there is such a thing as a "diesel battery". Perhaps you mean the batteries used in diesel cars; the batteries usually used in cars are lead-acid batteries, the acid being sulphuric acid.

How is a submarine powered?

Modern submarines are powered by a nuclear reactor. Others are powered by diesel engines while they are on the surface and batteries while they are submerged. The older ones that were powered by diesel and batteries had their limitations. While they were on the surface running on diesel engines they left a trail of exhaust smoke which gave away their position. When they were submerged and running on batteries they could only last so long and then they had to come to the surface, run the diesel engines and recharge the batteries. The submarines that are run by nuclear power do not have to resurface for a very, very long time.

What is the name of the last US Navy diesel submarine?

They are still in use as trainers for new personnel and certain jobs where they would find the radiation risk unreasonable. all of the deep-dive submarines with one major exception ( the atomic NR-l) are Diesel-electric. the Diesels are used only on the surface and to recharge the batteries- below the waves, we are running on the batteries alone!

How was the motor of an old submarine operated underwater?

All pre-Nuclear submarines were operated underwater by Electric motors connected by to the main propeller shaft. Even today, modern nuclear submarines have an emergency electric motor connected to the shaft as a backup. The motor was powered by DC Batteries taking up much space in the lower decks of the boat. Prior to the development of the submarine snorkel, older submarines were required to surface and start their Diesel Engines in order to recharge their batteries. Even today, modern submarines typically use a Diesel-generator to recharge the Batteries, as they are crucial to any emergency/casualty situation on board if the situation requires Reactor shutdown or scram. Modern Diesel-Electric submarines still use the same method of propulsion as the older boats did - electric motors powered by DC batteries that are recharged by Diesel Engines. The difference is that today's battery technology has given newer DE's the capability of much longer submergence times before recharge is required. Where hours were required in earlier boats, weeks can pass before a modern DE needs to recharge.

Will the Sony Xplod recharge rechargeable batteries when I plug it in?

No the Sony Xplod will not recharge batteries when it is plugged in.

How can you recharge batteries?

You can only recharge rechargable type

What speed did the World War 2 diesel submarine travel?

U. S. submarines in World War II had a top surface speed of around 20-knots. Submerged, their top speed was around 9-knots, although at that speed they would exhaust their batteries after one hour and have to surface to recharge them.

Can you charge your camera with outt the charger and with the batteries?

The camera operates on batteries, weather nicad( rechargeable) or alkaline or lithium. So no matter what, you must recharge batteries. If you purchase rechargeable batteries and the charger, you can recharge them outside the camera. If you don't recharge batteries with the supplied charger, you will shorten the life span of the batteries or kill them.

Is it a bad idea to recharge regular AA batteries?

Attempting to recharge non-rechargable batteries can result in fire or explosion. Don't do it.

Use the word recharge in a sentence?

He went off to recharge his phone when its batteries died.

Does heating alkaline batteries recharge them?

If you put them over the back of a stove for a while they will recharge
