- Water contains an average of 5 ml oxygen per liter of water. Fish absorb this oxygen directly into their blood stream by "inhaling" or sucking water in their mouths. The water travels to the gills where thousands of small blood vessels, called capillaries absorb the available oxygen. Capillaries have very thin walls. The oxygen moves through the walls of the capillaries thanks to the properties of pressure.
- Fish "exhale" carbon dioxide into the water in much the same way they inhale, but in reverse. Carbon dioxide moves in the blood to the gills. There, the carbon dioxide transfers through the thin capillary walls where it is "spit" into the surrounding water.
