Well, this is just plain and simple answer. You attach the bobber to the line. When you have a bite from the fish, you look at the bobber and it will move, so you know to pull in. If you want a scientific explanation, then use the internet.

Well to try and explain it , the line doesn't really do anything the reel does all of the work. But the line gets strung into the reel and pole, and then a hook is fastened onto the end along with weights for desired floating distance. Than when you put the bait on the hook, and the fish takes it, the line lets you reel in the fish.
