You'd be able to tell when your hamster is 'scared' or 'frightened' because they tend to act a little.. odd. Pacing back and fourth, hiding.. etc. If it is scared, I always suggest putting a towel over it's cage for a while so it feels safe.

If an animal gets scared, it will do it's best to protect itself from the upcoming danger. All animals have a different mechanism of protection. For example, turtles will retract to their shell, as you may have seen in Cartoons because the shell is hard, dirty, and looks very much like a rock. For an animal looking for a tasty turtle treat, all they will find is a 'rock',witch tastes bad and is hard to penetrate. The disappointed predator will move on. Cats will run and hide in small dark places where they are less likely to be found. Fish most commonly just swim away, but they also might hide behind a rock or in some vegetation if they get scared. All animals have different ways of protecting itself, but most have something to do with hiding. -Lulu Vikan

Typically a cat's fur will stand on end; it's ears may be upright or folded flat against the back of its head; it may arch its back; and it will hiss, spit, and howl. At some point, it will either attack what it is scared of, or turn tail ad run.
