Importantly, it provides biodiversity, and when the last few are gone their population will collapse and become extinct since you need more than a hundred to keep them from collapsing and there are only about 1000 left.
Hawaii
With only about 1200 individuals in 2006, and they were not all breeding aged adults, but that number included immature seals as well, according to the US Fish and Wildlife Service Endangered Species List. Additional Information: The Hawaiian Monk Seal was listed as "endangered" by the US Fish and Wildlife Services, (US FWS) Endangered Species List. The International Union of Conservation for Nature, or the IUCN Red List, also posted this species as "critically endangered", with a population trend as "decreasing". They have been declining for years, and even with serious conservation, and protection afforded them over the past years, the species isn't recovering. They still suffer from prey shortages, starvation, and limited feeding and breeding sites, all of which cause fewer young to be born, and less juveniles survive to adulthood. Many of the threats they have faced deal directly with humans, or human created waste. Entanglements in debris, fishing equipment, and netting, along with disturbances on breeding, and birthing beaches, as well as exposure to diseases and invasive species are all major factors in the Hawaiian Monk Seal population decline.
