Generally on an individual basis, their staff will help a person from their district that is having difficulty working with a federal agency. The Congressman's aid will contact and work with the agency to resolve the problem

In a general sense, affecting a large group of people, the Congressman will person work to resolve the problem. If a natural disaster happens, the Congressman will personally work to get it declared a federal disaster areas, and get federal funding back to the area.

They also attach amendments to bills called "earmarks" in which if the bill passses, money will go back to their district or state.
