If you have a coil of wire and pass a magnet trough it it will generate electricity in the coil. Similarly if you put a magnet in a coil of wire and pass electricity through the coil the magnet will move. An electric motor operates on the second principle - a rotor fitted with coils of wire is placed in side a cylinder formed from magnets and electricity is passed though the wire coils (from attachments on the rotor called brushes) and the rotor is made to spin.

If however you take the same motor and mechanically spin the rotor then the reverse happens and electricity is generated - the motor becomes a dynamo.

What devices use magnetism?

Devices such as electric motors, generators, MRI machines, and magnetic compasses utilize magnetism in their operation. Additionally, hard drives in computers, speakers, and some door locks also incorporate magnetic components for functionality.

Can a shunt motor be started without residual magnetism?

Yes. The field is provided by the shunt windings, which are connected in parallel with the supply. You may be confusing a motor with a generator, as you cannot start a shunt generatorwithout residual magnetism.

How do you convert electrical energy to kinetic?

Most often through induced magnetism such as an electric motor.

What is a motor in physical science?

A motor is a mechanism that spins by means of electric energy and uses magnetism to spin. It uses energy.

What of these is needed to operate an electric motor?

To operate an electric motor, you need a power source, typically electricity, to provide energy. Additionally, the motor requires a control system to manage the speed and direction of operation. Proper connections and wiring are essential to ensure the motor receives the correct voltage and current. Lastly, a load or mechanical system is often needed to utilize the motor's output effectively.

What would happen if Michael Faraday did not discover magnetism?

If Michael Faraday did not discover magnetism, our understanding of electricity and magnetism as interconnected forces may have been delayed. This could have hindered the development of important technologies like electric motors, generators, and transformers, which rely on the principles of electromagnetism for their operation.
