The fur seal is a common enough sea creature in New Zealand, and is found resting on rocky shores. They are individual hunters - i.e. not hunting in packs. There are several different species of seal - and the New Zealand one is closer to sea lions - external ears etc. They do not have the 'harem' sociology of other seals.
Squid, seabirds, and fish are their main diet, and they dive deeply for food.
There are several fur seal species identified, and the one we have in NZ is Arctocephalus forsteri. One of about ten in its genera.

It is not so much that Australians took possums to New Zealand, but rather than New Zealand people brought them from Australia for the purpose of starting the fur trade there. Possums were seen as a ready source of fur, food and fibre.
