The fur seal is a common enough sea creature in New Zealand, and is found resting on rocky shores. They are individual hunters - i.e. not hunting in packs. There are several different species of seal - and the New Zealand one is closer to sea lions - external ears etc. They do not have the 'harem' sociology of other seals. Squid, seabirds, and fish are their main diet, and they dive deeply for food.

So buying possum fur clothing not only keeps you warm but also helps the native animals of New Zealand!
There is no record that any human hunted fur seals in the Antarctica, because there are no fur seals there.

It is not so much that Australians took possums to New Zealand, but rather than New Zealand people brought them from Australia for the purpose of starting the fur trade there. Possums were seen as a ready source of fur, food and fibre.
