Upon encountering a stimulus, paramedium with move quickly backwards, change direction slightly and move forwards again, repeating this until it passes the obstacle. Paramecium have different reactions for different stimuli, for example, they move towards slight acidity and warmth in water but will swim away from extremes in temperature and acidity.

they have surface receptors that respond to chemicals in their environment.
one interesting thing is that when they are subjected to something harsh like acid they emit fibers that extend all the way around the paramecium

they move down a chemical gradient going from least concentrated to most concentrated

they also have a contractile vacuole which removes excess h2o when the paramecium is in a hypertonic solution
