A polarized plug allows connection in only one direction. This ensures that electrical components with a higher risk of user contact, such as the shell of a lamp socket, as opposed to the center pin, is connected to neutral, and thus not presenting an electrocution hazard.

It does not. It actually simply makes sure that the chassis or "return" circuit is grounded, reducing the possibility of shock. House current is alternating current; it is therefore not polarized.

It ensures that the device connected to the plug can only be attached to outlet in one way so that the hot side is connected in the same way each time.

If you don't have much experience with stick welding you will have a little more trouble determining the difference. I have seen guys weld all day long with the wrong polarity. Then I would grab their welder to use for couple of minutes and I could tell right away. It all comes down to experience.
