I can't find a non-copyright picture but I'll do my best...
Basically you'll see it looks like a ring spanner with a cutter coming into the round part- the letter O in my little drawing is the nut. []===|=(>O)
Unlike a spanner you pick one which is larger than the nut to leave room for the cutter =>. Pop the ring over the nut, line up the cutter so it's more or less vertical on one face. The other end of the handle has a bolt []=== running up the middle which presses against the cutter at the point shown by "|"in my drawing, but is not attached to it so it doesn't try to turn the cutter, it just presses it. You just keep turning the bolt until the cutter splits the nut. Never fails.
with a nut splitter
There are many approaches that can be used on a rounded nut or bolt. Many of them depend on the access you have to the nut. If you have easy access you can try using Vice grips, a pipe wrench, or a hammer and chisel/screwdriver. You may also consider applying heat to the nut or welding another nut to the existing nut if you have the proper equipment. You should put some penetrating oil on the nut, penetrating oils such as liquid wrench help you break the nut loose. Other tools designed specifically for removing rounded nuts include a nut splitter and bolt/nut extractors (See the website at the related link for a discussion on removing a rounded nut with a hammer and screwdriver, cutting tool, penetrating oils and nut extractors.)
