You should be able to use a self ballasted lamp in a regular socket safely as long as you do not exceed the wattage recommendations of the fixture. ∙ 14y agoYou can not use a regular light bulb in a self ballasted lamp because the lamp is some type of florescent light and a regular ligh bulb is incandescent. The ballast itself will tell you what kind of bulb it will run as well as somewhere else on the lamp.

∙ 10y agoA "regular" lamp has, what is commonly referred to in the United States, as an Edison base. It is also known as an E26 base. That is the size in mm's, a.k.a. 26mm. The self ballasted lamp also has an E26 base and will screw directly into the existing socket. For some reason, European standard bulbs have an E27 base. Therefore, in Europe, I assume that if you replaced it with a self ballasted bulb, it would have an E27 base.

Remove the lava lamp by lifting up the glass. It separates from the base because it just sits in it. Unscrew the old bulb and screw another one in. When you remove the bulb you will notice that the bulb and base may not be the size of a standard household bulb.
