There are actually two types of solar generators.
The first is a photovoltaic cell. It is comprised of two layers of silicon, one doped and one un-doped. Sunlight excites electrons in the top layer, causing them to travel to the lower layer. This results in an electric potential, or voltage between the two. Electrons then pass through a circuit back to the top layer.
The second type uses sunlight to heat water. The heated water then runs a steam-turbine generator.
