If you suck some air out of a straw, the remaining air in the straw will have to contract in volume in order to maintain the same pressure, which it will do because normal air pressure is still pressing on the liquid in which the straw is submerged. The contracting air will then draw up the liquid.

When a milkshake is taken through a straw at a pressure of 0.071 ATM the straw contains 0.5 mL of liquid. So how much liquid is consumed at 0.092 ATM?

When taken the first pressure and the first volume, you try to find out what the second volume is given the second pressure. So, taking that into consideration, you multiply the first pressure (0.071) with the first volume (0.5 mL) and divide it by the second pressure (0.092) which gives you the answer of 0.39 mL (SF) Keep in mind that pressure and volume are inversely proportional.

What role does atmospheric pressure play when someone is drinking a liquid through a straw?

when you drink through a straw you remove some of the air in the straw. because there is less air the pressure of the straw is reduced. but the atmospheric pressure on the surface of the liquid remains the same. henceforth how it helps you drink

How does air pressure help drinking through a straw?

when you drink through a straw you remove some of the air in the straw. Because there is less air pressure of the straw is reduced. But the atmospheric pressure on the surface of the liquid.

What happens to the air pressure in the straw when you suck lemonade?

The pressure in the straw goes to negative.[We cannot have a negative pressure - this grammar form is known as an oxymoron.]A2. The pressure in the straw is reduced, and thus the liquid is able to be drawn higher in the straw.

When you drink with the help of a straw what forces the liquid up the straw?

Air pressure. If you suck, the air pressure of the surrounding air is greater than the pressure inside the straw.

Why a liquid travels up a straw when you suck on it?

1) Air inside the straw moves 2)Pressure inside decreases 3)Pressure of the atmosphere is greater then the Pressure inside the straw=Liquid moves up the straw!!!

Why is it possible to suck up liquid with drinking straw?

Basically, you reduce the pressure in the straw. The pressure inside the straw is less than the atmospheric pressure which presses down on the liquid outside.

Why does a soft drink rises when sucked with a straw?

As you suck on the straw air is removed from the inside of the straw and the air pressure within the straw is reduced. Once the straw's air pressure is reduced past atmospheric pressure of about 760 mmHg, the Patm forces the drink up the straw and into the sucker's mouth. Gases move from high to low pressure areas until equilibrium is reached.

What is the volume of a straw of bull semen?

A straw is .5 ml or .25 ml

Why will a straw not work on moon?

When you suck on a straw you generate low pressure, so that means the pressure outside the straw, by contrast is higher and so matter gets sucked into the straw. On the moon there is no atmosphere and so the pressure is zero. No matter how hard you try you cannot create a pressure of less than zero inside the straw and so no suction can occur.

Why does sucking on a straw make the liquid come up?

When you suck on a straw the pressure at the top of the straw becomes lower than the pressure at the bottom, which forces liquid up.

How does a straw work?

As you create a partial vacuum in the top part of the straw, the weight of the entire atmosphere above the glass applies a pressure of 15 PSI on the liquid surface. This pressure pushes the liquid up the straw until the pressure in the straw returns to 15 PSI too. If you keep creating the partial vacuum the air pressure will push the liquid all the way to the top of the straw and out.
