When you suck from a straw you create a partial vaccuum which reduces the air pressue inside the straw. The air pressure outside the straw pushes down on the milk and forces it up through the straw.

Why you should always be cautious and open a bottle or can of soda slowly?

Because it will spill all over you. A bubbley drink like that has gases and things to make it rise and if opened quickly, spill.

How does drinking through a straw show that fluids flow from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure?

Sucking on the straw reduces the air pressure inside it. This allows 'natural' air pressure to push down on the liquid in the container, causing it to rise up the straw..

What will happen if a glass of bottle filled with a liquid sealed tightly and heated?

If heated to and above boiling point the pressure in the bottle would begin to rise. Depending on how much it is heated it might either stay like that, or the increased pressure might cause the bottle to burst.

Assuming that you could survive in outer space without a space suit would it be possible to drink using a straw explain y or why not?

No. The action of a drinking through a straw is that you suck the air out of the straw, and the air pressure on the outside of the cup them pushes the liquid up the straw. If there were no air pressure on the surface of the liquid, then there wouldn't be anything to cause the liquid to rise. However; 1. If there were no air pressure, the liquid would boil and vaporize; there wouldn't be any liquid to drink. 2. In weightlessness, you can't suck water through a straw even IN atmosphere; the liquid forms globules under the influence of its own surface tension. On the Space Station, the astronauts drink from sealed bulbs; sort of like juice pouches. You squeeze the pouch to push the liquid into your mouth.

What happens to the bottle when you fill it to the brim then put it into the freezer?

Water expands when you freeze it. Therefore, the water level in a bottle should rise after you have frozen it into ice. Please see the related links for details.

How can you made your own homemade Thermometer?

To make your own homemade thermometer, a person will need a plastic bottle, a clear straw, some putty, water, rubbing alcohol, and food coloring. Fill a quater of the bottle with equal parts water and rubbing alcohol. Add a few drops of food coloring to help see the change in temperature. Place the straw in the bottle and seal the top completely with the putty, making sure the bottom of the straw does not touch the bottom of the bottle. The liquid will rise and fall through the straw when the temperature changes.

When a bottle of soft drink is opened why does it pop?

The fizzing or popping you hear when you open a bottle of soda is the carbon dioxide escaping. Shaking the bottle makes the bubbles rise to the top and come out more forcefully.

How do you make a straw that won't work?

Sabotaging a StrawPutting one or more pinholes in the straw, above the level of the liquid, will allow air to enter the straw at the top, and the liquid will not rise in the straw. To use this "sabotaged straw", merely switch ends (flip it over) so that the pinholes go under the liquid.

What will happen in tornado in a bottle if you do not spin the bottle?

What proteins in milk make a cake rise?

It's not the milk alone that makes a cake rise. If the recipe includes milk it probably also contains either baking powder and/or baking soda. This combination of a base (Baking soda or Baking Powder) and an acid (milk) causes a slight chemical reaction which causes the cake to rise.

Why does juice rise up the straw on a hot day?

As you have more than likely taken the juice from the fridge, when you inserted the straw you have created a way the juice can escape. (usually by you sucking on the straw) But as the juice heats up, it also expands slightly causing pressure to build up in the juice container and forcing it to go up the straw to find a way out.
