If you follow the upper radiator hose, you will find the thermostat housing, the thermostat is inside this. Please ignore the idiot who replied to this question earlier, he obviously has no idea what a thermostat is.
The thermostat stays closed until the coolant inside the engine reaches what temperature the tstat is, at which point it opens and allows coolant to flow through the hoses and the radiator to cool it before returning to the engine to continue the cycle.

Changing a thermostat on a 1995 Jeep Cherokee is very easy to do. The thermostat has two bolts holding it in place. Take the bolts off and remove the thermostat from the casing and replace with a new one.
