Like a normal diode............. unless it includes a "back biased" diode to prevent conduction in this mode as is common in zener diodes rated at about 10 volts or more, then it acts as an open circuit.
No. An ordinary diode, be it silicon or germanium, conducts in one direction only, whereas a zener diode conducts in both directions, but at different voltages. An ordinary diode is used to rectify, using its forward bias characteristics, while a zener diode is used to regulate, using its reverse bias characteristics.
Work in reverse bias.(breakdown at a particular voltage to keep the volt. constant so used as voltage regulator) same as diode when forward biased.
In a half wave rectifier voltage across load resistance is not consistent, because for positive pulse of input voltage diode work as a forward bias i,e half wave rectifier treat as closed circuit and for negative pulse of a input voltage diode work as a reverse bias so no current flow through circuit. therefore voltage output is not consistent. In full wave rectifier two diodes are used at the both side of secondary coil of transformer. due to that for positive pulse of input voltage one diode diode work as a forward bias another as a reverse bias. for negative pulse of a input voltage second diode work as a forward bias another as a reverse bias,so consistent voltage can be provided by full wave rectifier.the nature of output voltage of half wave rectifier and full wave rectifier is that it flows through with only one polarity either in positive or negative in the circuit.
A specific amount of current is allowed to flow through a diode. If the current passing through the diode exceeds this specific value, the diode gets heated and is likely to be damaged. Therefore, in the biasing circuit of a resistance which limits the current passing through the diode within its specific value is called Forward biased diode. ANSWER: A forward bias diode is just a diode that it is conducting in the forward direction. Positive to anode and negative to cathode
yes diode can be used as a switch as it conducts current in only one direction.it is a open switch when it reverse biased.and as aclosed switch when it is forward biased.but we consider diode as ideal .

it can work in reverse bias unlike other diodes
Work in reverse bias.(breakdown at a particular voltage to keep the volt. constant so used as voltage regulator) same as diode when forward biased.
diode does not work on zero bias
The ammeter is connected in different way in forward and reverse bias zenner diode. So that all of the board will work right going forward and reverse.
diode conducts in forward bias.so it is on switch. in reveres bias it will not conduct.so it is off switch
zener diode is a special type of pn junction diode that work in breakdown region . There are two types of brekdowns in zener i.e avlanche breakdown and zener breakdown depending on the doping concentration. A zener diode in an on state can be considered as a voltage source ,equal to its zener voltage n hence act as an voltage regulator
A: Believe it or not that is the only time that it is useful
It has a very sharp reverse breakdown voltage curve and is not damaged by the reverse current, as some normal diodes might be.

Selenium diodes work much like any other diode. They allow current to flow in a forward direction and block current from flowing in the opposite direction. They have a higher forward bias voltage then silicon and as such generate much more heat then a comparable silicon diode. Most selenium diodes will therefore have an integrated heat sink that helps to dissipate all the heat generated. As a zener diode, selenium is used in surge suppression where its heat sink helps in survivability during a surge. However, its low alpha (measure of nonlinearity) means that the voltage during a surge is very high and usually unsuitable to be used as protective device without other components in parallel. The reverse voltage is about 26 Volts, so to get higher voltage zener diode, many are placed in series. By connecting them back to back, then a bidirectionial zener diode can be created. Selenium diode were very common in the 1950s and can be seen in industrial applications of the time. Some model train power supplies were seen to use these components. Since the advent of silicon diodes and their more efficient operation, these part have disappeared from use.
A Shockley diode uses a metal-semiconductor junction instead of a p-n semiconductor-semiconductor junction. This results in a device with a much lower forward bias voltage drop and much faster switching times.
