The term "engine" is in reference to a device that uses fuel to operate and is physically distinguished differently from an electric, spring driven, or hydraulic motor. The engine in a car is considered and internal combustion device. It is often mistakenly called a motor but at this point in time technology has not produced a car that is operated fully by a motor.
