Anabolic steroids have a relatively small effect on the skeletal system; most of the effect seen with their use is in causing muscle cells to become hypertrophied, resulting in a larger than usual muscle mass. Offsetting this is the possibility of the testes becoming smaller, a more aggressive temperament, mood swings, acne, and liver cancer with extended use over years (see Lyle Alzado).

Steroids make your muscle growth much faster by making the muscles recover faster and changing the tissue's capability to grow. It has permanent effects on your muscle, making the space between the muscle tissue more open. Steroids can also have some unwanted side effects, such as making you more aggressive and having some effects in your libido.
