Baptism is simply a symbol of being cleansed by God. It is also the outward announcement that you have choosen God as your savior.

Catholic AnswerParaphrased from the Catechism of the Catholic Church: Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit. Baptism really frees you completely from Original Sin and all actual sin committed up until then, and you are reborn as a son of God. You are made a member of Christ and incorporated into His Christ. "Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water and in the word." Roman Catechism II, 2, 5; cf. Council of Florence: Denzinger-Schonmetzer, Enchiridion Symbolorum, definitionum et declarationum de rebus fidei et morum (1965).

Baptism frees a person from the original sin what Adam and Eve created. It gifts you with the power of the Holy Spirit. It makes you a part of the Catholic Church and you are entitled to eternal life and find a place in Heaven with the heavenly father.

A:

Whatever its spiritual importance, baptism, by itself, has no effect on anyone's life. Some people may not realise they were never baptised, for whatever reason, yet lead exemplary Christian lives. Other people may have been baptised yet on reaching adulthood decide no longer to consider themselves Christian, in which case baptism becomes irrelevant in their lives.

It is the belief in the power and importance of baptism that is likely to affect your daily life. If you believe that baptism makes you spiritually a better person, then this can affect your self-image. You may believe that, having been baptised, the Holy Spirit guides you through life. On the other hand, if you believe that infant baptism has left you trapped as a Christian although you prefer not to be a Christian, then this too can affect your daily life.
