The Bible has many rules and regulations, more than modern people can follow. If you believe every word is literal, then you would be stoning adulterers, putting homosexuals to death, killing witches, and making very gory animal sacrifices that usually aren't done in the modern world.
You can use your intelligence to help you decide which of the myriad rules are still relevant--for example "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth"--from Matthew 6:19 is a real challenge to those of us in the material world!
I shall let the scriptures speak for themselves.

A Christian Perspective:Christians that believe choose to believe. Believing that certain facts are true differs from personal faith. It is one thing to know that Jesus died to save the world. That is a fact. My decision to let that fact affect me personally is faith. I am helpless to do anything to disprove a fact. The fact exists. I am not helpless to decide whether or not it will have a personal effect on me.

That made the men fighting in them more willing and inspired. Them believing that they were on a holy mission gave motivation.
