If someone does not have insulin in their bloodstream, then they're blood sugar will spike. Some non diabetics have slight variations in blood sugar (lower or higher than the "non-diabetic average" however anything over 200 is confirmed Diabetes).
Usual causes of Extreme hyperglycemia:
1. When your diagnosed, and obviously a person wouldn't have taken insulin at that point.
2. Didn't give yourself the correct ammount of insulin (Forgot to give insulin [more common with people who have an insulin pump], or just a REALLY mad miscalculation on carbs)
If this is you, or a someone you know, just make sure you/(s)he checks for keytones, and tries to bring down their blood sugar, IMMEDIATELY. And drink >A LOT< of water (because it will help flush out the keytones from bloodstream/ bladder.)
