Humans have a complicated relationship with coal. In economic terms, coal mining is a major industry in Appalachia (a mountainous area along the eastern half of the United States encompassing several states). Coal is a major source of energy for the generation of electricity in the United States.
However, coal has some major drawbacks. First, mining coal is a very hazardous job that requires very skilled and trained miners as well as strict management controls to minimize the risks of injury and death. The other major drawback is coal was a major sequestration of carbon during a previous geologic age. By burning coal, we are now releasing carbon back into the atmosphere in the form of carbon dioxide that has not been in the carbon cycle for millions of years. This is having a major impact on the climate in the form of global warming.
