That depends on whether you are referring to the fairly small continental tropical (cT) mass that forms around latitude 30°N in the western states, or to the humongous continental polar (cP) mass that occupies a goodly chunk of eastern Canada and sneaks down into the northeast US. Continental masses are dryer than maritime masses, ergo they are the driving forces behind the cold, clear winter weather in the northern states.
If the continental Arctic (cA) air over Canada mixes with the cP, it can get down to the point where we New Englanders close our windows and put on long-sleeved shirts. :-)
polar continental air mass
When the glacier melted from North America it left a mass of "heterogeneous" rock debris (loosely termed "glacial drift") etc
Europe and Asia as well as North and South America.
continental tropical air mass =)
North America comprises 4.8% of the earth's surface, about 24 million square km. (24,221,000). It is 16.5% of earth's land area. The average elevation of North America is slightly less than the average of the seven continents, so its mass would be a little less than 16.5% of the world's total. The average elevation North America is 720 meters. The continental plate extends into the earth below sea level, but what I am shooting for here is a decent approximation for the total mass. The average density of compacted sand is 2080 Kg/m3. Sand is predominantly silicon oxide. There are both lighter and denser materials forming the land mass, but this figure should get us easily within an order of magnitude. Solid basalt is about 3011 Kg/m3, and granite is 2691 Kg/m3. Much of North America rests on basalt, but I'll use the density of granite for my average. Now all we need do is the dimensional analysis. 24,221,000,000,000 m2 * 720 m/2691 Kg/m3 = 6.5 trillion Kg. North America weighs roughly 7 billion short tons.
continental polar
cpThe air masses with the least influence on the weather of North America are the continental tropical air masses.
He didn't affect the world of his time. It is only in hindsight that history records that the Vikings made it to North America. In his life there was no Mass Communication or newspapers so the ancient world had no idea he had gotten to North America.
polar continental air mass
Central America, not being a confident itself, finds itself in two continents. The official boundary between North and South America is the center of the waterway that fitness the Panama Canal. So all countries on the continental land mass in Central America, except for Panama, are entirely in North America.
Continental Polar
Laurasia is an old continental mass that includes North America, Europe, and Asia. It was recognized after the proposal of Alexander Du Toit in his book Our Wandering Continents.
It mixes with continental air and gradually becomes a continental air mass
North America is larger than South America and has more land mass
This is legal, it can be done.
North and South America are not located on the same land mass as Asia and Europe are. However, North and South America are located on the same land mass as each other, just as Europe and Asia are.
