Crude oil can affect the environment in many way, one of these ways is by oil spillages in the the ocean. the causes the oil to spread out over the surface of the water which leads to the deaths of hundreds of marine life. a good example of this is when you see the pictures of the birds covered in the black thick oil on their feathers, which prevents them from flying and if the try and get into the water they will sink because we their feathers are too heavy with the layer of oil on top of them.

Oil refineries typically release a number of pollutants into the air. In most developed countries there are strict controls on what can be released. As well as this there are "fugitive emissions", gases which escape from various cracks, seams and connections in the vast array of pipes that are in an oil refinery.

As well as air pollution there is sometimes water and stream pollution, risk of industrial accidents and noise health effects.
