When I stopped drinking alcohol a few years ago I found that I needed to have a drink in my hand while I read, watched tv, listened to the radio, surfed the net or ate. I started out with fizzy drinks like lemonade and genger beer (I avoided caffinated drinks) consuming about 2 litres a day. After a few months I had a routine blood test as part of a general health check and my blood sugar was really high. I switched from ordinary fizzy drinks to diet fizzy drinks. My blood sugar came back down to normal. I drink a lot of carbonated water too and I am trying to save the diet ginger beer for the weekends only. So, for me, at least, Diet Soda and carbonated water helped me stay away from booze because it gave me something to drink that kept my mind off what I really wanted to drink without totally ruining my health.
