Dysentery is a disease of the intestinal tract cause by Amoeba (ah-MEE-bah) parasites. These parasites multiply rapidly by dividing, and attack the lining of the intestines. This results in cramping and diarrhea, sometimes bloody, for a long period of time.

The damaged intestinal tract is also susceptible to infection by harmful bacteria along with the parasitic attack, so treatment may include an antibiotic along with an amoebicide.

These parasites are usually spread by drinking contaminated water or eating contaminated raw foods.

Yes. I had dysentery and it caused me severe pain for 3 months and moderate pain for the 7 months following. Most of the pain was localized in my left side. Sometimes I couldn't even stand. I went to the hospital at least 3 times because of pain.
