Depends on the method of production. Conventional gas or coal powered stations have a high impact, whereas wind or solar have much less impact. Hydro-electric, while not producing CO2, does have an impact in terms of taking up land to make the lakes necessary to drive theturbines and in terms of the downstream effects of the change of flow of the rivers concerned.

It's not the electricity that;s bad for the environment but the way it's made. Burning coal lets off smelly fumes that are bad for the environment (pollution). That's why scientists are thinking up 'Greener' ways of creating electricity, like burning methane and garbage.

Electricity can be produced by so many ways. Of all these, the easiest and the cheapest one is the technique of electromagnetic induction. Here we need mechanical energy to be converted into electrical energy.

To have mechanical motion we can utilize the potential energy stored up with the stagnant water preserved in a dam. Here evaporation of water right from the reservoir can change the climate in the surrounding area.

The next technique to have mechanical energy is right from the steam generated by boiling water. So heat is required for this purpose. Heat can be had from coal or by nuclear power. In case of using coal the atmosphere gets contaminated by the smoke given out as coal is burnt. In case of nuclear reactor the remnants are most radioactive and very much harmful to the living beings.

Scientists try to find some other easier way as well as less harmful to the environment.

Solar energy is ok. But here storage of electricity claims storage batteries which in turn are not easily recycled. That brings condemned batteries as a huge debris in our land.
