when you say surface materials I assume you mean pavement or concrete. When a plant stsrts to grow in a crack in the pavement it's growth and roots will push the pavement out making the crack bigger allowing more plants to grow, these plants will start to collect dust and dirt making it possible for even more plants to grow on top or the pavement and if left unchecked the area will be taken over completely/

Why in non living things growth is extrinsic?

In non-living things, growth is considered extrinsic because it does not involve the internal development or replication of the materials that make up the object. Instead, growth in non-living things typically results from the external addition of new materials or components to the existing structure. Examples include the growth of ice in a freezer or the accumulation of dust on a surface.

Surface-controlled mononuclear growth surface-controlled polynuclear growth or diffusion-controlled growth Mathematically explain why?

Surface-controlled mononuclear growth occurs when the rate of nucleation is limited by the surface reaction, leading to a growth rate proportional to the surface area of the growing phase. In contrast, surface-controlled polynuclear growth involves multiple nuclei forming and growing on the surface, with growth rates influenced by the availability of surface sites. Diffusion-controlled growth, however, is limited by the rate of mass transport to the growth interface, resulting in a growth rate dependent on the diffusion coefficient and concentration gradient. Mathematically, these growth mechanisms can be described using different rate equations, where surface-controlled processes often exhibit linear relationships with respect to time, while diffusion-controlled growth typically follows a parabolic relationship due to the square root dependence on time.
